METER to grant 2020 fellowships

Updated January 14, 2020

PULLMAN, Wash.—METER Group, Inc. USA (METER) is now accepting applications for the 2020 G.A. Harris Fellowship. The annual program, founded in honor of the late Grant A. Harris, was designed to support studies focused on growing people’s understanding of physical, chemical and biological processes in the environment.

The fellowship provides $10,000 in METER instrumentation to six students pursuing graduate degrees in environmental, agricultural and geotechnical science. To enter, applicants must be currently enrolled in a U.S. or Canadian university or college.

“Project costs can restrict scientific research,” said METER Environment Support and Product Manager Chris Chambers. “The G.A. Harris makes it easier for graduate students to conduct their studies and uncover new insights.”

Since 2009, the program has helped finance 83 graduate studies. Past G.A. Harris fellows include Christpher Beltz, a PhD student at Yale University who is studying the effects of environmental change on carbon cycling across the semi-arid west, and Rachel Rubin from Northern Arizona University who examined whether plant microbiomes can be hardened against heat waves.

“These sort of discoveries help drive decisions for the future and help us keep pace with issues impacting the environment,” explained Chambers.

The deadline for applications is January 24, 2020. A committee will evaluate submissions based on novelty and feasibility of the research, its potential impact on the field and the likelihood for success. Applicants will be notified of the committee’s decision by March 1, 2020. For more information and to apply, go to metergroup.com/p46835.
